St. Michael's Cathedral Basilica

Victorian Gothic cathedral in the heart of downtown, free to enter

St. Michael's Cathedral Basilica, on Bond Street just east of Yonge, is Toronto's Roman Catholic cathedral and one of the best pieces of Victorian Gothic architecture in the city. Completed in 1848, it is built from Credit Valley sandstone with pointed arches, stained glass windows, and an interior that manages genuine grandeur despite its relatively modest footprint.

The cathedral is a minor basilica, one of roughly 1,800 in the world. The choir school attached to it — St. Michael's Choir School — has produced singers and musicians for the cathedral since 1937 and is reputed to be one of the finest choral training programs in North America. Free admission; modest dress is expected during services.

The cathedral sits in a transitional part of downtown, between the financial district and the entertainment district. The Garden of Rest on the south side provides an unexpectedly quiet space surrounded by office towers.
