Uxbridge is a small Ontario town that has made a useful identity out of its countryside. It calls itself Canada's Trail Capital, and for once the slogan has some substance: the township has more than 200 km of trails running through forest, moraine hills, wetlands, and old rural communities.
The town is close enough to Toronto to be a day trip, but it does not feel like a suburb once you are out on the back roads. The best visit is outdoors first, with a walk in Durham Regional Forest or one of the moraine trails, then a stop in town for lunch.
Uxbridge also has a few odd, specific sights that keep it from being just another country town. The Thomas Foster Memorial is a copper-domed mausoleum inspired by Foster's travels, and the Uxbridge Historical Centre gives a compact look at the township's Quaker, railway, and farm history.
