La Tuque is a working town on the Saint-Maurice River, deep in Québec's Mauricie region. It is not pretty in the old-town sense, and that matters: the reason to come is the scale of the country around it. The municipality stretches across a huge northern territory of rivers, forest roads, lakes, outfitters, and winter trails.
For travellers already in Mauricie with a spare day or two, La Tuque is the Upper Saint-Maurice made practical. In town, the Parc des Chutes de la Petite Rivière Bostonnais gives you waterfalls, forest paths, and local interpretation without needing a long expedition. Beyond town, outfitters and controlled harvesting zones open access to canoeing, fishing, snowmobiling, and backcountry skiing.
The place has a hard northern edge. Distances are long, roads can be rough, and many of the best trips need planning rather than casual wandering. If you want boutiques and easy charm, stay in Québec City or Montréal. If you want a practical base for the wild upper river country, La Tuque makes sense.
