Canora

East-central Saskatchewan railway town with Ukrainian settler heritage and Good Spirit country nearby.

Canora is a small railway town in east-central Saskatchewan, north of Yorkton and close to the lakes and sand dunes of Good Spirit country. It is not a place to cross the province for, but it has a clearer identity than many prairie towns of its size: Canadian Northern Railway roots, Ukrainian block-settlement history, and a cluster of odd little museums along Main Street.

The best reason to stop is the Ukrainian story. Families from western Ukraine settled the district from the late 1890s, and Canora still marks that heritage with the Ukrainian Heritage Museum, the restored Ukrainian Orthodox Heritage Church, and the big "Lesia" welcome statue holding bread and salt at the edge of town.

Canora also works as a quiet base for Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park, about half an hour southwest. The park has a broad sandy beach and a dune trail that gives the surrounding farmland a more surprising edge than the map suggests.
