Fort Young

Eighteenth-century fort, now a hotel and historic site

Fort Young occupies the headland at the southern edge of the old town, looking south across the bay. The fortifications — thick volcanic-stone walls, a row of black cannon facing the sea — are preserved as part of the Fort Young Hotel, which has been built into and around the old structure since the 1960s. The hotel terrace allows visitors to walk along the ramparts even if they are not staying.

The view across the harbour at sunset is one of the best in Roseau. The fort itself can be visited at any time; the small interpretive boards in the courtyard explain its history.

A story
Built in 1770 by the British governor Sir William Young to defend the new town of Roseau, the fort changed hands several times between Britain and France. After it ceased military use in the 1850s the structure was variously a police station, prison, and now the core of the Fort Young Hotel — but the original cannon and stone walls remain on display.
