Morne Bruce

Hill viewpoint above Roseau

Morne Bruce is the steep green hill that rises immediately behind Roseau, named for an eighteenth-century British army engineer who built the original fort on its slope. A 20-minute walk from the Botanic Gardens through a steep palm-shaded trail brings you to the top, where a cross (the "Cross of Morne Bruce") and a long stone wall mark the lookout point.

The view stretches over Roseau's red roofs to the Caribbean and, on clear days, south to Martinique. Sunrise and late afternoon are the best times — midday glare washes out the colours. The walk down is faster but harder on the knees.
