Roseau New Market

Saturday morning farmers' market by the river

The New Market, on the north bank of the Roseau river where it meets the sea, is the principal food market for the capital — and one of the best in the eastern Caribbean. The covered stalls and the spillover stands on the surrounding pavements sell mountains of dasheen, yams, cassava, breadfruit, mangoes, papayas, bay leaves, soursop, herbs by the bunch, hot sauces and bottles of vanilla extract.

Come on Saturday morning — by 6 am the market is fully open and by 11 am the best produce is gone. Vendors are mostly women who have come down from villages in the hills. Bargaining is mild; small change helps.
