State House

Official residence of the President of Dominica

The State House (formerly Government House) is the official residence of the President of Dominica, a colonial mansion of white-painted timber and stone with broad verandas and a pitched roof set in walled gardens above the cathedral. It was built in 1840 for the British governor and has been the head of state's residence ever since.

The building is not generally open to the public, but the gardens host occasional state functions and the exterior can be photographed from the road. The setting — on a small rise above the town with views to the sea — gives a sense of how power was arranged in colonial Roseau.
