The best restaurants in San Salvador are concentrated in the upmarket neighbourhoods of Zona Rosa and Colonia Escalón, which have a range from Salvadoran traditional to international cuisine. The historic centre has abundant street food — pupusas, tamales, yuca frita — at very low prices, and the comedores (small family restaurants) near the markets serve filling local meals.
The national dish is pupusas — thick corn tortillas stuffed with cheese, loroco flower, beans, or chicharrón, served with curtido (pickled cabbage) and tomato salsa. They are cheap, filling, and good everywhere. The best pupuserías are often humble places with plastic chairs and a wood-fired comal.
