Getting Around

The historic centre and the Zona Rosa are about 5 km apart, and traffic in San Salvador is heavy. Taxis are the most reliable way to get between areas; agree on a price before getting in, or use Uber which operates extensively here and is often cheaper and safer than street taxis.

The city's bus system is extensive but complex to navigate for visitors. The most useful routes for tourists are those connecting the historic centre to the western suburbs (Zona Rosa, Colonia Escalón).

Walking is fine in Zona Rosa and Colonia San Benito during the day and early evening. The historic centre is best explored on foot in the morning; avoid it at night. Do not walk between major areas after dark — use taxis.
