San Salvador's colonial architecture was largely destroyed by earthquakes, so the sights are a mix of modern landmarks, a few surviving historic buildings, and the vibrant street life of a Central American capital. The city rewards exploration on foot in certain areas — the historic centre, Zona Rosa, and the suburban shopping strips each have a different character.
