San Salvador sits at 650 metres elevation which gives it a milder climate than the coastal plain — warm year-round but not punishing. The dry season (November to April) is the most comfortable time to visit, with little rain and clear skies. The rainy season (May to October) brings afternoon downpours, usually lasting a couple of hours, which cool the temperature but make outdoor activities in the afternoon less appealing.
There is no bad season for visiting the city. The rainy season is when the surrounding countryside is greenest. The dry season is easier for day trips and volcanic hikes.
Semana Santa (Holy Week, the week before Easter) sees major religious processions throughout the historic centre, especially on Good Friday. It is one of the best times to see traditional Salvadoran culture, though hotels fill up and should be booked well in advance.
