Iglesia El Rosario

The Church of El Rosario in Parque Libertad is one of the most striking buildings in Central America — a brutalist barrel-vaulted structure from 1971 whose windowless concrete walls conceal a blazing interior of stained glass and recycled metal sculpture. The architect Ruben Martinez designed it as a deliberate rejection of conventional colonial church architecture. From outside it looks like an aircraft hangar; inside, the coloured light filtered through the abstract glass panels transforms the space entirely.

The church is usually open during the day. Admission is free. Give it at least 20 minutes to let your eyes adjust and take in the details of the iron sculpture and the glass panels. This is one of the genuine surprises of San Salvador.

A story
Padre Delgado, the leader of El Salvador's independence movement, is buried beneath the floor of El Rosario. He was arrested twice by the Spanish for sedition and died in 1832 having never seen his country fully free. The building that would be erected over his grave a century later became one of the most radical pieces of religious architecture in Latin America.
