Cathedral of Santa Ana

The Cathedral of Santa Ana dominates the central square and sets the tone for the city's architectural ambitions. The neo-Gothic design is ambitious for a Central American city of this size — the twin towers and carved stone facade were clearly meant to signal Santa Ana's prosperity during the coffee-boom years of the late 19th century.

The interior is open for visits and mass. Go in the early morning or late afternoon when the light through the windows is best. Parque Libertad, Centro Histórico.

A story
Completed in 1905 after decades of construction, the cathedral's neo-Gothic facade — twin towers, pointed arches, white-painted stone — is among the most photographed buildings in El Salvador. The interior is cooler and darker than the square outside, with stained glass that filters the afternoon light in unexpected colours. It sits directly on the Parque Central, where Santa Ana's social life plays out in the evenings.
