Cerro Verde National Park

Cloud-forest national park between Santa Ana, Izalco, and Cerro Verde volcanoes

Cerro Verde National Park is the high, green staging ground for the volcano country south of Santa Ana. The park sits on the flank of an extinct volcano, with forest trails, cool air, and sweeping views toward the sharper cones of Izalco and Santa Ana. On clear mornings it is one of the best places in western El Salvador to understand the geography in a single glance.

Most travellers use Cerro Verde as the access point for the guided hike up Santa Ana Volcano, but the park is worth a slower stop in its own right. Short trails wind through cloud forest and viewpoints open over Lake Coatepeque. Bring a layer, even if Santa Ana is hot; the summit area is often breezy and damp.
