Iglesia El Calvario

The Church of El Calvario is a few blocks from the main square and worth the short walk. The colonial-era facade and interior have the organic, slightly asymmetrical character of a building that has been modified and repaired over several centuries rather than designed all at once.

The church is typically open during the morning and for afternoon mass. The area immediately around it is a neighborhood market, with stalls selling produce and street food throughout the day. 2 blocks south of Parque Libertad.

A story
El Calvario was the colonial parish church before the cathedral was built, and it retains an older, more intimate character — a smaller scale, thicker walls, and a more weathered facade that make it feel genuinely ancient rather than grandly restored. It survived the 1873 earthquake that prompted the construction of the new cathedral, and its continued presence gives the center of Santa Ana its layered quality.
