Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle

The Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle stands on the central Parque Central, the traditional heart of the city. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of San Pedro Sula and the most prominent religious building in northern Honduras. The exterior is a relatively plain neo-colonial design, but the interior is well-maintained and cool — a welcome break from the heat outside.

The Parque Central around it is the main public square of the city, ringed by benches, vendors, and the municipal buildings. It is busiest on Sunday mornings and during the Feria Juniana celebrations in June. For all its limited architectural distinction, the cathedral and its square give the city a recognisable centre and are worth at least a passing visit.

A story
San Pedro Sula is one of the few Honduran cities where the cathedral is not the oldest building in town — the city's colonial layout was largely obliterated in the 20th century as the industrial hub grew rapidly. The current cathedral dates from the 20th century and occupies the central square, as Spanish colonial custom required, but the square itself has been rebuilt around it.
