Mercado Juárez

The Mercado Juárez is the city's main traditional market, a covered two-storey building within walking distance of the cathedral. The market has long catered to both locals and visitors crossing from El Paso — it is well-stocked with crafts from across Chihuahua state and the wider north: Tarahumara-woven baskets, serapes, leather goods, silver jewellery, pottery, and Ojos de Dios.

The food section at street level is the best place in the city for a cheap, honest lunch. Stalls serve pozole, tamales, chile rellenos, and the classic northern dish of carne con chile colorado. Prices are reasonable by Mexican standards and dramatically cheaper than anything across the border. The market is most active in the mornings; by early afternoon things start to quiet down.
