La Petatera is one of western Mexico's most unusual festival structures: a temporary bullring in Villa de Álvarez, assembled each year from timber, rope, and woven petate mats. Its architecture is traditional, communal, and deliberately impermanent, which makes it far more interesting than a standard arena.
The structure is tied to the annual Charrotaurino festivities, so timing matters. Outside the festival season there may be little or nothing to see, but when it is standing, La Petatera offers a vivid look at regional craft, ritual, and public celebration around Colima.
