Museo Universitario de Artes Populares

The folk-art museum of the University of Colima — usually shortened to MUAP or the Maria Teresa Pomar museum, after the collector who founded it — holds one of the broadest collections of Mexican artesania anywhere. Textiles, masks, lacquer, ceramics, painted gourds, and devotional objects from every state of the country fill several rooms of a converted colonial building north of the centre.

Standout sections cover the alebrijes of Oaxaca, the Huichol yarn paintings, and a remarkable assembly of Day of the Dead figures. It is a working teaching collection rather than a polished tourist attraction — the labelling is uneven and some galleries close without warning — but for anyone interested in Mexican craft traditions it is essential.
