Getting There

Guaymas International Airport (GYM), officially General José María Yáñez International Airport, is a small airport with connections to Mexico City and Hermosillo; US connections are limited and most travellers from North America arrive by road. The airport is about 8 km north of the city.

By road, Guaymas is on Mexico Federal Highway 15 — the main highway south from Nogales on the US-Mexico border — about three hours from the border and four hours from Hermosillo. The drive through the Sonoran Desert is dramatic, particularly in spring when the cacti flower.

The ferry to Santa Rosalía on the Baja California peninsula is an option worth considering if crossing to Baja: the crossing takes about six hours and sails across the Sea of Cortez through some of the best whale-watching waters in the world. Ferries are operated by TMC (Transportación Marítima de California) and reservations are strongly recommended in high season.
