Guaymas sits on a calm natural harbour rather than open beach, but the nearby town of San Carlos (20 km northwest) has some of the best beaches in Sonora. Miramar beach at Bacochibampo Bay is a popular swimming and walking spot; the bay is also home to the only pearl farm in the Americas — a legacy of the region's Pinctada mazatlanica oyster beds. The Sea of Cortez offers exceptional conditions for diving and snorkelling, with water temperatures ranging from 16°C in winter to 28°C in summer.
