Templo de Santo Domingo

Mexico's most extravagant baroque church, with gilded interior.

Address Calle Macedonio Alcala, Centro

The most spectacular baroque church in Mexico. The Dominicans built it between 1570 and 1608, and the interior is almost entirely covered in gilded plaster — a dense ceiling of genealogical trees, biblical scenes and angels that culminates in the extraordinary domed ceiling of the Rosary Chapel. The adjacent former monastery now houses the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, whose centrepiece is the treasure of gold, jade and pearl grave goods recovered from Tomb 7 at Monte Alban.
