Playa Zicatela

Playa Zicatela is Puerto Escondido's most famous beach and one of the most powerful shore breaks in the Americas. A long straight stretch of dark sand backed by palapa restaurants and surf shops, it draws professional surfers from around the world. The waves here are not just big — they are fast, hollow, and close to shore, breaking directly onto a steep beach with almost no gradual shallow water to slow them down.

If you are not an experienced surfer, the beach is still worth visiting as a spectator destination. From the restaurants and bars lining the top of the beach, you can watch the action up close. At dawn, the light is spectacular and the surf spots before the winds pick up. The Adoquín, the pedestrianized main street of the old town, runs parallel to the northern end of Zicatela and is lined with cafes, tour operators, and shops selling surf gear.

A story
Zicatela's shore break is known as the Mexican Pipeline because its hollow tubes resemble those of Hawaii's Banzai Pipeline. During the November surf season, waves can reach eight metres or more, and international competitions have been held here since the 1990s. The undertow is severe — swimmers drown here every year, and the red flags are not a suggestion.
