Acuario de Veracruz

The Acuario de Veracruz is one of the largest public aquariums in Latin America, with exhibits focused on the marine life of the Gulf of Mexico. The main tanks hold sharks, sea turtles, moray eels, and large schools of tropical fish; there are also displays of rays, seahorses, and Gulf coast freshwater species. The shark tunnel is the centrepiece, and it is genuinely impressive.

The aquarium is on the malecón south of the city centre, about 20 minutes' walk from the Plaza de Armas. It is well maintained and is the best option in the city for families with children. Allow two hours. There is a small cafe, and the surrounding area on the malecón has seafood restaurants nearby for lunch afterwards.
