The Malecón

The malecón runs for several kilometres along Veracruz's harbor and Gulf coast, connecting the old city centre to the beaches and neighborhoods to the south. The northern section, closest to the historic centre, is the most atmospheric: fishing boats and container ships move past in the same water, the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa sits on its island in the distance, and vendors sell fried seafood and coconut drinks along the promenade.

Walking the malecón in the early morning or evening is one of the better ways to take the measure of Veracruz. The city's port identity is visible everywhere — the smell of the Gulf, the industrial shipping beyond the harbor wall, and the easy mixing of working port and leisure waterfront that characterises places where the sea has always been central to daily life. The southern malecón, past the aquarium, becomes more resort-like and less interesting; stick to the northern section near the centre.
