Tabasco 2000 is a 1980s civic complex in the north of the city, built during the Tabasco oil boom as a statement of modernity and ambition. It includes a convention centre, government buildings, a shopping mall, an planetarium, and the distinctive Plaza de la Corregidora — a large open-air civic square with sculptures and fountains. The architecture is dated in the way that ambitious 1980s government projects always date, but the scale is impressive.
The planetarium (Planetario Tabasco 2000) is one of the better ones in Mexico and popular with school groups. The complex is also where many of Villahermosa's more upmarket restaurants and hotels are located, making it the effective commercial centre of modern Villahermosa.
