The historic centre is entirely walkable and compact — everything within the walls is within 20 minutes on foot. The malecón runs along the waterfront and connects to the main gates. Outside the walls, taxis are cheap and reliable; the city has no metro but fixed-route colectivo taxis cover the outer neighbourhoods.
The outlying forts (San Miguel and San José el Alto) require a taxi or rental car — they are 3–4 kilometres from the centre on hills that make walking in the heat unpleasant. Most guesthouses can arrange a driver for the day if you want to combine the forts with a visit to Edzná.
