Campeche's historic centre is a contained world of coloured facades, colonial churches, and fortified walls built against the constant threat of pirate raids. The city is small enough to walk entirely in half a day, but it rewards lingering — the forts have excellent museums, the streets are genuinely photogenic, and the pace of life inside the walls is slow and pleasant.
