Casa de los Venados

The largest private collection of Mexican folk art open to the public — over three thousand pieces, displayed inside the restored colonial home of an American couple who have lived in Valladolid for decades. The tour, given by one of the owners or a long-term staff member, takes about an hour and runs in English at 10:00 each morning; admission is a suggested donation that goes to local charities.

What sets the place apart is the texture: this is a working family home, not a museum, and the art — Day of the Dead figures, Huichol beadwork, Talavera ceramics, painted devils from Oaxaca — is hung, mounted, and stacked in the rooms where people actually live. Idiosyncratic, generous, and a useful crash course in regional crafts before you start shopping.
