Ek' Balam is one of the best reasons to base yourself in Valladolid rather than only pass through on the way to Chichén Itzá. The Maya site is compact but powerful, with walls, ceremonial buildings, a ball court, and the great Acropolis structure where elaborate stucco work gives the ruins a personality of their own.
The site is far enough from town to need transport, but close enough for an easy half-day. Go early for cooler weather and fewer tour groups, then consider adding nearby cenotes if you have a driver or bike plan. Even if climbing rules change, Ek' Balam remains one of the Yucatán's most rewarding archaeological visits.
