Parque Francisco Cantón Rosado

Valladolid's main plaza, named after a 19th-century governor of Yucatán, is the social engine of the town. Shaded by tall laurels and trimmed almonds, it has the standard ingredients of a Yucatecan zócalo — a central kiosk, white-painted confidente benches (the s-shaped two-seaters that face opposite directions), and a low colonial fountain. At its edges sit the cathedral to the south, the municipal palace to the north, and a row of restaurant arcades on the east side.

Come at sunset. The pavement fills with families, vendors selling marquesitas (the local rolled-up crepe stuffed with Edam cheese and Nutella), and Mayan women selling embroidered huipiles from the benches. The trees fill with grackles whose evening din is a town soundtrack of its own.
