Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman

Cenote Oxman sits inside the grounds of an 18th-century hacienda about four kilometres south-west of Valladolid, down a long, sandy track. The cenote is open at the top, a deep, almost perfectly round well of stone hung with long, thin tree roots that fall ten or fifteen metres to the dark water. A wooden staircase descends to a swimming platform; there is also a rope swing, which young Mexicans use with much more enthusiasm than caution.

Entry includes use of the hacienda's pool and grounds. The food at the on-site restaurant is good — try the panuchos. Quieter than the cenotes on the main road to Mérida, and a useful escape on hot afternoons.
