Hato Caves

The Hato Caves are show caves about 12 km north of Willemstad, open to the public since 1991. The limestone formations include impressive stalactites and stalagmites, a subterranean lake, and a resident colony of long-nosed bats (Leptonycteris curasoae) — endemic to the ABC islands — that roost high in the cavern roof and are best seen at dusk when they emerge to feed.

Guided tours run regularly and last about 45 minutes. The caves are cool (around 20°C), a welcome relief from the heat above ground. The entrance path leads through a small nature trail with native Curaçaoan vegetation. The caves are well-maintained and easily accessible from Willemstad.

A story
The caves contain ancient petroglyphs made by the Arawak people who lived on the island before European colonisation. The petroglyphs are carved into the cave walls near the entrance and show geometric patterns and stylised human figures. Carbon dating suggests some are over 1,500 years old — among the oldest human-made marks on Curaçao.
