El Parterre

El Parterre is a formal landscaped park at the edge of Aguadilla's old town, built in 1851 and still one of the nicest places in the city to sit down and do nothing in particular. The park has fountains, benches shaded by mature trees, and views toward the sea at its western edge. In the early evening it fills with locals, which makes it a pleasant place to watch the sun get low over the Mona Passage.

The formal garden layout survives in modified form — the geometric hedges and flower beds have been replanted and maintained over the years, though the scale of the park is modest enough that it never feels stiff or ceremonial. It is a short walk from the main plaza and the church, and makes a natural pause between the historic buildings of the old town. Sunsets from the park's seaward side are worth timing your visit around.

A story
El Parterre was formally laid out in 1851, making it one of the older planned public gardens in Puerto Rico. The name refers to the formal French garden style — parterres are the low, geometric hedged beds that define the layout — which was fashionable in Spanish colonial design in the mid-19th century.
