The Church of Saint Charles Borromeo is the oldest church in Aguadilla, built in 1783 and still the spiritual centre of the town. It faces the main plaza — the typical Spanish colonial arrangement that oriented civic and religious life around the same public square — and the church's simple white facade gives the square a dignified, unhurried feel. Mass is still celebrated regularly and the interior is open to visitors outside service times.
The building's longevity is a feat given the seismic history of northwest Puerto Rico, one of the island's most earthquake-prone areas. Each major earthquake required reconstruction, and the church's walls carry the scars and repairs of more than two centuries of Caribbean history. It is worth stepping inside to see the altar and the carved wooden details that survived where the structure around them did not.
