Wilderness Surf Break

Wilderness is the most celebrated surf break in the Aguadilla area and one of the most respected in Puerto Rico. It works best on a north or northwest swell, which hits the reef at Punta Borinquen and peels off into long, workable walls. The wave is powerful and fast enough to attract serious surfers, and the site has hosted rounds of the Puerto Rico Surf Series. On a good day the right-hand point break runs for several hundred metres.

This is not a beginner beach. The reef, current, and size of the wave on bigger swells require solid water confidence and experience reading breaks. Surfers without local knowledge are advised to watch from the clifftop first and assess the conditions carefully before paddling out. There are no lifeguards and the access track down to the water is rough. If you are an experienced surfer looking for Aguadilla's best wave, this is it.

A story
Wilderness sits at Punta Borinquen, the island's northwestern tip, where north and northwest swells wrap around the headland and produce a long, fast right-hander. The break has hosted international surf competitions and draws professional surfers from Puerto Rico and beyond when the swell is running.
