The wooden house where José Celso Barbosa was born in 1857 has been preserved as a small museum dedicated to his life. Barbosa, a physician, sociologist, and political leader, is one of Puerto Rico's most celebrated 19th-century figures, and the house holds documents, photographs, and personal effects from his career.
The building itself is a fine example of late 19th-century Bayamón vernacular architecture — wooden, raised on stilts, with a deep porch. The museum is small and you can see everything in 30 to 45 minutes, but the staff are friendly and the context they offer is more than the bare exhibits would suggest.
