El Estoril

A Mayagüez institution since 1973, El Estoril is the city's longest-running Spanish restaurant — old-school in the best sense, with white tablecloths, a long bar, and a menu that has barely changed in fifty years. Paella for two, garlic shrimp, salt cod, a heavy hand with olive oil. It is not cheap, but the portions are generous and the cooking is consistently good.

The dining room is dimly lit and a little time-warp; this is where Mayagüez goes for an anniversary dinner. Reservations recommended on weekends.
