Getting There

Mayagüez is a two-hour drive west from San Juan along the PR-2 highway. The route is straightforward and the highway has dual carriageway for most of the way. Public buses run from San Juan but are slow; the standard option for travellers without a car is a público — shared van — from the main terminal in Río Piedras.

Eugenio María de Hostos Airport (MAZ), three kilometres north of the city, has limited service — generally a single daily JetBlue or Cape Air flight to San Juan, sometimes a short hop to the US Virgin Islands. Most visitors fly into San Juan and drive.

The west-coast destinations of Rincón, Aguadilla and Cabo Rojo are all within 30 to 45 minutes by car. Public transport between them is minimal — rent a car or hire a driver.
