A Mayagüez creole restaurant in a converted house near the centre, La Casona is the right place to try the heavier Puerto Rican classics: mofongo stuffed with stewed beef or seafood, arroz con gandules, pasteles in season, fried snapper with tostones. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable.
The dining room spreads through several rooms of the old house, with high ceilings and tile floors, and the patio at the back is the best seat on a warm evening.
