The Plaza del Mercado is the old central market of Mayagüez, a single-storey concrete-and-tile building a few blocks west of Plaza Colón. It is smaller than the great Caribbean markets of Port-of-Spain or Pointe-à-Pitre, but it does the same job: fish, plantains, root vegetables, hot peppers, fresh juice stalls, and a couple of food counters where you can sit and have mofongo with whatever stew is going that day.
Best in the morning, when the produce is fresh and the local fishermen drop off the day's catch from Mayagüez Bay. By mid-afternoon things slow down.
