Teatro Yagüez

Teatro Yagüez is the most beautiful building in Mayagüez and arguably the most beautiful theatre on the island. Painted Caribbean peach with white pilasters, a copper dome and a wedding-cake interior in white, gold and red velvet, it has the air of a small European opera house dropped into the tropics.

The theatre still operates — concerts, plays, the occasional film festival. If nothing is on, the box office staff will often let you have a quick look inside during the day. Outside, the building anchors the south side of Plaza Colón and is unmissable.

A story
Francisco Maymón Palmer, a Catalan immigrant who made his money in Mayagüez's coffee export houses, built the theatre in 1909 as a personal vanity project — and lost it to fire in 1919. He rebuilt it within a year, in the same Spanish-influenced Beaux-Arts style, and his initials are still on the proscenium arch.
