The Mayagüez campus of the University of Puerto Rico — known to everyone simply as the Colegio — is the island's main engineering and agricultural school and one of the most respected technical universities in the Spanish-speaking world. It was founded in 1911 as a college of tropical agriculture and now has around 13,000 students.
The campus is a pleasant grid of mid-century classroom blocks shaded by enormous African tulip and mango trees. The main quad has a couple of small museums (geology and zoology) that are open to the public, and the engineering library has a striking modernist façade. Walking through campus on a weekday is one of the easiest ways to see contemporary Puerto Rican student life. The main entrance is on Avenida Atenas, fifteen minutes' walk north of Plaza Colón.
