Two essential half-day excursions are within easy driving range. Tuskegee, 40 miles east on I-85, is the home of Tuskegee University, the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, and the legacy of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver. Selma, 50 miles west, is the Edmund Pettus Bridge town where Bloody Sunday triggered the Voting Rights Act, and is the most direct continuation of the Montgomery civil rights itinerary.
