Downtown Montgomery is compact and walkable — most of the civil rights landmarks are within a few blocks of Court Square Fountain, and the State Capitol is at the top of Dexter Avenue. A free downtown trolley (the Lightning Route) loops the main sights on weekdays.
A rental car is essential for the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and Legacy Museum (they have a free shuttle between the two), and for sights outside downtown such as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Hank Williams' grave, and the F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum. Ride-hailing apps work well in the urban core but get patchy in outer neighbourhoods.
