The unassuming red-brick church at the foot of the State Capitol was Martin Luther King Jr.'s first pastoral posting, from 1954 to 1960, and the planning headquarters of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The sanctuary upstairs is largely as King would have known it; the basement contains a famous mural tracing his life and the civil rights movement.
Guided tours (book ahead) run roughly hourly on weekdays and Saturday mornings. The visit is short — forty-five minutes — but the building is the historical core of what happened in Montgomery in 1955–56.
