Delaney Park Strip

11-block linear park through downtown — originally a firebreak

A long strip of grass running 11 blocks through the heart of downtown — eleven blocks long and one block wide, with a paved path down the middle. It was created in 1923 as a firebreak between the original townsite and the woods to the south. The 9/11 memorial, the Veterans Memorial, and an unusual sundial that uses your shadow to tell the time are all here.

In summer the park hosts the city's Fourth of July festival, free outdoor concerts, and casual softball games. In winter the path is plowed and lit, and the park works as a shortcut across downtown on foot or skis.
