Lake Hood Seaplane Base

The world's busiest seaplane base — over 500 takeoffs and landings on a peak summer day

The world's busiest seaplane base sits beside Anchorage International Airport on a pair of linked lakes. Planes are taking off and landing constantly through the summer; on a good day in July you might see one a minute. There is no formal viewing area, but the perimeter road circles the lake and there are several pullouts where you can watch from feet away.

The aircraft are mostly small floatplanes — Piper Super Cubs, de Havilland Beavers — operated as personal transport, charter services, and bush-flying support for hunters and fishermen heading into the wilderness. Many of the floatplane companies offer scenic flights over Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains.

A story
More than a thousand floatplanes are based at Lake Hood, which adjoins the international airport. In peak summer the lake handles around 500 take-offs and landings a day, more than any other seaplane facility on earth. Driving past at sunset is more entertaining than watching real planes.
