Thumb Butte is the landmark on Prescott's western skyline, and the trail around it is the city's obvious half-day hike. The route climbs through ponderosa pine, granite outcrops, and open viewpoints, giving a quick sense of the high-country landscape around town.
It is popular rather than remote, with a developed trailhead and forest recreation facilities nearby. Go early in warm weather, bring water, and treat it as a real walk rather than a roadside viewpoint; the reward is a broad look over Prescott and the surrounding national forest.
